Challenge 1: the No-Death High Score Challenge
This is a challenge common to all SMB1 and SMB3 hacks. Start a new game, and try to get as many points as possible until you lose a life, or (less likely) get past all the hacked levels. The game stops once you die, no matter how many lives are left. Warp Zones are allowed, but Retro-Warp Zones (if there are) aren't. Good luck! Submissions will be ranked by top score. You can try more than once, of course. All your submitted results (NSMs you'll submit) will be put up, with the best on top and the others below, at the appropriate ranks (at least until there are too many ranks).

"179,950, died in 2-4... darn, I didn't get nearly as far in this one." He still did a good job getting to 2-4 without dying, the levels in his hacks aren't easy!

I tried maxing out the points I could get in 1-1, and I started getting it pretty well. However, I just kept dying in one part of 1-2 at every try. This one is the best I did yet.

Challenge 2: the Fastest Completion Challenge
This is a challenge common to most hacks, but mostly for the complete ones. In this one, try getting past all levels as fast as possible. You can lose as many lives as you want (just don't get Game Over), but not take Warp Zones. No need for a chronometer, I can calculate the exact length of the NSM by looking at its file size. Start the NSM recording right before starting the game, and stop it right after finishing. Good luck! Submissions will be ranked by top time. You can try more than once, of course. All your submitted results will be put up, with the best on top and the others below, at the appropriate ranks (at least until there are too many ranks).

Challenge 3: 1-4 Fire Mario (by Frank Maggiore)
"I've thought of another possible challenge for my second Smb1 hack, and an NSM of me doing it. To get through 1-4 killing Bowser with fireballs... TOUGH. Tough but possible!"
Exactly. You have to get through 1-4 and have Fire Mario at the end to kill Bowser with fireballs (you'll have to either start with Super Mario or Fire Mario). The hardest part is the narrow ways with those fire bars that rotate in the opposite way ... I just kept getting hit there when I tried myself. But Frank got it already, so it proves that it's possible!

He started with Super Mario, got the Fire Flower at the start, then went through the level, carefully avoiding getting hit by the fire bars. If you want to see how to avoid getting hit, look at this ... but it's easier seen than done!
Got an interesting challenge that isn't here? Let me know!
Submit it at acmlm@mail.overclocked.org or at the Message Boards. Thanks!
